Unplugged Canada: A Parent-Led Movement to Protect Kids’ Mental Health

Unplugged Canada is a grass-roots, parent led organization raising awareness across Canada about the impacts of smartphones and social media on children's mental health, social development and education. Given the growing body of research, particularly from Canadian sources, highlighting the concerning impacts of early and excessive smartphone and social media use, Unplugged is building a judgement-free and friendly community that unites and empowers parents and caregivers to prioritize their children’s mental health by delaying this addictive and distracting technology. The way they do this is by asking parents to pledge to delay smartphones for their kids until at least 14 years old (the age now recommended by psychologists). More than 7000 parents in over 1000 schools across Canada have joined the collective movement, which is changing the societal norms around when kids are given these devices. If you are interested in bringing more information about Unplugged to your community or school please visit their website www.unpluggedcanada.com where you can find lots of resources and contacts for local chapters who can offer support.
